Graceful and intriguing, Moorish idols flit about our Hawaiian reefs in flashes of yellow, black & white stripes. This time I made it with a patina to be more like the real fish. These unusual Butterfly fish provide kisses all day. Beautifully detailed and designed so that the long sinuous fin of each large sterling silver butterfly fish is one piece and attached to a generously sized “invisible” ear wire, these earrings mimic the sinuous and exaggerated splendor of a Moorish Idol along the reef. 1.3” long and 3/4” wide.

The beautiful and graceful inspiration for these pieces are Moorish Idol fish. They are similar to butterfly fish, with some variations in color and diet. Floating in the current of this handmade, hand-hammered Sterling Silver necklace, a Mermaid examines her treasures. With a seaward-blown island blossom tucked behind her right ear, she finds a live conch on the reef where she was born.

Beneath the spines of the prickly wana (pronounced “vana”), is its beguilingly textured shell. Finding one intact while beach combing or diving (after the occupant is gone and spines sea-worn away!) is a treat and a source of excitement. There’s just something about that tactile and intriguing texture! This glorious design of nature inspired this creation.
